What is Manuka Honey?
Native to New Zealand, Manuka Honey is a mono-floral variety of honey. Derived from one particular species of flower in the Manuka Bush (Tea Tree), Manuka Honey contains a Unique Manuka Factor (UMF). This is primarily because the bees drawing nectar from the Manuka tree’s blossoms, to preserve the nectar in the hive, build in glucose oxidase. However, when this enzyme encounters body fluids, it gradually releases adequate quantities of hydrogen peroxide, which causes bacterial distress sans tissue damage.
The Unique Manuka Factor (UMF)
Studies indicate Associate Professor Biochemistry from New Zealand Waikato University, Dr. Peter Molan, was the first to discover the Unique Manuka Factor. By diluting Manuka Honey over ten times in an attempt to remove hydrogen peroxide, he realized that there were considerable levels of antibacterial elements left behind. Nonetheless, since 1996 TradeNZ, an organisation in association with the Honey Research Unit launched a benchmark to determine the potency of honey using a specific procedure. This resulted in the formation of industrial benchmark UMF. The rating however, depended upon the activity of the tested honeys. To enjoy the UMF status, the tested honeys must nevertheless, obtain a rating of minimum 10 on the UMF scale for the purpose of curative applications. Honey, which achieves this rating, is suggestive of Manuka Honey. Higher the UMF rating greater the honeys benefits for health. According to Prof Molan, not all Manuka Honeys contain UMF without every level of UMF indicating potent antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic properties.
Manuka Honey and Methylglyoxal (MG)
One of the most common constituents in all types of Honey is the Hydrogen peroxide that acts as a natural antibiotic. However, specific types offer other antibacterial elements such as MG, present in inadequate quantities in most kinds, is available in far superior concentrations in Manuka. This is because the dihydroxyacetone elements that converts to MG, exists in elevated levels in the Manuka Flowers nectar, which gives Manuka the potency of antibiotic and UMF status.
