Corns and calluses are thick, hardened areas of skin formed as a consequence of rubbing, friction and pressure on the skin. Medical term which refers thickened skin forming corns and callus is “Hyperkeratosis”. Though corns and calluses are talked together, they are different from each other.
Corn is a small patch of thickened hard and dead skin surrounded by inflamed skin. Corns are generally smaller and tend to develop on the parts of our feet that don’t bare weight. They can be generally seen on sides of toes or even between toes. When pressed corns cause pain. Corns are known as helomas or clavi.
Calluses are hard and thick flattened areas of skin that can develop on hands, feet or any part suffering with repeated friction. Calluses are rarely painful and vary in size and shape and are often larger than corns. Calluses are known as tyloma.

Repetitive actions imposing friction and pressure cause corns and calluses. Some sources of friction and pressure include:
- Improper walking motion
- Wearing ill fitted shoes and high heels
- Skipping socks
- Playing instruments
- Use of Hand tools regularly
- Foot deformities
Treatment options for corns and calluses
- Trimming away the excess skin with scalper under doctor supervision
- Oral antibiotics are useful for clearing corns but pus is removed with small incision
- Apply moisturizing cream to callus and cover it for 30 minutes if instructed by doctor.
- Use coarse towels and pumice stone to rub off the dry skin from callus after bath
- Moleskin pads when properly positioned help to relieve pressure on a corn.
- Special corn and callus removal liquids containing salicylic acid are used to treat them but are not suitable for everyone
- Creams containing urea are useful for treating corns and calluses but do not use unless recommended by doctor
- Custom made shoe inserts are used to counter foot deformities further preventing formation of corns and calluses.
- Sometimes surgery is recommended to correct the bone alignment causing friction.

Natural and simple home remedies are very much useful to treat corns and calluses. Let us see some of the most effective home remedies for corns.
Home remedies for Corns
1. White Vinegar
It is excellent remedy for corns as high acidity level of white vinegar helps to soften the hard skin. White vinegar also has antifungal and antibacterial properties which reduces risk of infection.
- Mix one part white vinegar with three parts of water. Dab this diluted vinegar onto skin with cotton and leave overnight by covering it with adhesive bandage. Next morning rub the thickened skin with pumice stone and apply coconut oil or olive oil to keep it moisturized. Do this daily until corn come out.
2. Baking Soda
Baking soda is natural exfoliating agent which helps to get rid off dead skin covering corn. It also shows antifungal and antibacterial properties which keeps skin free from infections. It is also used to treat calluses.
- Add 2-3 tablespoon of baking soda in bucket of warm water. Soak the feet in it for 15 minutes. Then rub it off with pumice stone to remove dead skin.
- Mix one teaspoon of baking soda with lemon juice and water to form thick paste. Apply this paste carefully on corn and cover it with bandage. Leave it overnight and clean the paste with luke warm water and exfoliate gently with pumice stone in next morning.
Use these remedies daily once until corn is peeled out.
Citric acid present in lemon made it useful to remove corn at home easily. Citric acid softens the hardened skin and it eventually falls out. Lemon is also used to heal calluses.
- Apply fresh lemon juice on corn and allow it to dry. Do this 2-3 times a day
The antioxidant property of garlic is helpful to treat corns. It further prevents infection as it shows antibacterial and antifungal properties.
- Rub half garlic clove onto corn and cover it with a bandage. Leave it overnight and in next morning, remove the bandage and wash the feet with warm water. Repeat this until corn disappears
- Make a paste of 3-4 garlic cloves and add little vinegar to the paste and apply it onto corn with help of cotton ball. Now secure it with tape along with cotton ball. Leave for 3 hours and then remove the tape and clean the area. Repeat this for several weeks until you see the result.

Simple and effective remedy to remove corn is to use papaya. The enzymes present in papaya will slough off hard and dead skin. It also ease the pain and discomfort caused while removing corn. Papaya also helps to make corn dry and make it to fall off quickly.
Use Raw papaya for best results in short time.
- Grate small piece of fresh raw papaya and extract its juice. Dab the cotton in juice and apply it on corn and secure it with tape. Leave it overnight and in next morning exfoliate the affected area with pumice stone. Repeat this remedy until you are satisfied with the result.
It is wonder herb which heals corn due to its anti- inflammatory property. Turmeric also helps in fast healing.
- Mix one teaspoon of turmeric powder with little honey to make a thick paste. Apply it on corn and allow to dry. Repeat this 2-3 times a day for one week until the corn extrudes out.
Home Remedies for Calluses
1. Apple cider vinegar
The acidic nature of apple cider vinegar helps to soften the hard skin and helps in speed up the healing process.
- Soak cotton ball in apple cider vinegar and tape it on callus before going to bed. Leave it overnight and in next morning exfoliate the dead skin with pumice stone and keep it moisturized with coconut oil or olive oil. Repeat once daily till callus disappears.
2. Bread and Vinegar
This is very effective remedy for calluses on the feet. Paste of Bread and Vinegar helps to soften the hard skin and reduce infection.
- Soak your feet in warm water and then exfoliate it. Clean and pat dry with towel. Now soak half slice of bread in white distilled vinegar. Then keep the soaked bread on callus and wrap it with a bandage to firm its position. Leave it overnight and then wash it off with water in the next morning followed by moisturizing cream. Repeat daily at night until callus is gone.
It is the effective and most used remedy to treat calluses due to its acidic nature. Onion has antimicrobial and anti inflammatory properties.
- Sprinkle some salt and lemon juice on a thick onion slice. Put this on calluses and secure it with a tape. Leave it overnight. Repeat this daily for a week until callus is removed easily.
4. Castor oil
Castor oil is good natural remedy for calluses as it moisturizes the dry and hard skin which makes it effective to removes calluses.
- Soak your feet in warm water for 15 minutes and then exfoliate the area with pumice stone. Cover the callus with cotton ball dipped in castor oil and secure it with a tape. Continue this daily until callus disappears.
5. Sea salt
Sea salt acts as a natural scrub to get rid of dead and dry skin from callus which further helps in healing callus.
- Mix equal proportions of sea salt and olive oil to form a paste. Gently scrub the paste onto callused areas in circular motion for few minutes. Rinse it off with warm water and dry followed by moisturizing cream. Do this daily until calluses are healed.
The soothing effect of chamomile helps in healing callus and the anti inflammatory property reduce the discomfort while extruded out.
- Brew 2 cups of chamomile tea and add it to the small foot tub. Soak the feet in this soothing water tub for about 10 minutes. Repeat this daily for a few days in the evening as it moisturizes the feet overnight.

Prevention of corns and calluses is easy by following simple measures:
- Wear shoes and heels which are comfortable and are properly fitted.
- Always use cotton socks rather than wool or synthetic that cause skin irritation.
- Keep your feet dry and friction free
- Wear non medicated corn pads and bandages over areas that rub against foot wear
- Replace worn soles as it provides little protection on hard surfaces while walking
- Avoid shoes with pointed toes and high heels
