What are the Different Types of Dogs

Dogs have been man’s best friends. This is true to its words. Since times immemorial dogs are closely associated with human beings. There are a number of different types of dogs. Each dog breed is unique in its size, temperament, health and grooming needs. Depending on the breed of the dog, they can be divided into different categories. The American Kennel Club has recognized 157 breeds of dogs.


Hound group

Man has groomed this breed for assistance in hunting and sport. Among this group few dogs develop vision and they are known as “sight hounds” or “gaze hounds”. This breed is the swiftest and tallest among the ancient breeds. Their strong eyesight helps them to sight the prey and their dexterity helps them to catch it. Few dogs in this breed have a strong sense of smell. Their physical strength and determination to hunt makes them unique in the breed. The dogs in this breed are known as Basset Fauve De Bretagne, Basset Griffon Vendeen, Basset Griffon Vendeen, Norweigian Elkhound.

For activities like transportation of goods, rescue and search operation, pulling carts and protecting people, these types of dogs is very apt and suitable. They are known for their strength and intelligence. Russian Black Terrier and German Pinscher are some dogs in this group.

Herding group

Herding group of dogs is popular for their assistance to man in maintaining flocks and herds of animals. These dogs have the ability to drive the animals in the herd into groups. They are quick learners and are good at listening to commands. German Shepherd, Puli, Border Collie and Briard belong to this group.


Miscellaneous Group

In this group there are different breeds of dogs waiting for recognition by the American Kennel Club. Puggle, Cane Corso, Dogo Argentino are some of the names in this category.

These dogs are very vigorous and they like to be present in the outdoors. Playing and running are the activities they are good at. Now they are associated with English firemen. They weigh between 40-70 kilos and reach a height of 20-24 inches.

Boxer dogs have their origin in Germany. They weigh up to 64 pounds and grow almost 25 inches in height. They have a square face. Walking is their passion. But they should never be released from the leash. They gel well with children. They were originally known for hunting wild animals and boars. Their unique qualities are their strength and playful nature.
