What Makes Skin Dry in Winters?

1. Environmental Factors

Factors like dry air, harsh winds combined with low humidity/ temperature levels, during wintery days, rob the skin of moisture making it appear lackluster and dull.

2. Prolonged Hot Water Soak

Soaking in hot baths for a long time or taking hot showers too, produce the same effect. Therefore having a bath/shower in warm water for just five to ten minutes, helps protect skin from winter dryness

Natural Skin Care Tips for Winter

Tip #1: Aloe Vera Gel for Dry Skin

Rubbing naturally obtained Aloe Vera gel on the face and wash after half an hour. This is one of the most effective treatments for dry skin. It also aids cell regeneration keeping the skin glowing.

Tip #2: Salt Massage

After a bath/shower, massage a handful of salt on skin on damp skin to alleviate skin dryness.

Tip #3: Natural Oils

Before bathing, massage your body with warm coconut/sesame/almond or olive oil.  This helps retains moisture and keeps skin silky smooth.

Tip #4: Cucumber Pack

Cucumber works really well as a natural moisturiser and helps combat skin dryness.  Applying a paste of cucumber on the face and washing off after half an hour improves skin tone and enhances softness.

Tip #5: Mild Cleanse

Cleanse gently preferably with products that do not contain antibacterial preservatives and harsh deodorants as these have a possibility of playing havoc on skin health

Tip #6: Gentle Exfoliation

Exfoliate skin once or twice a week using a gentle exfoliating scrub. Try using a mild exfoliation body wash available in the market to keep skin smooth. Besides, do not exfoliate by rubbing the skin.  It can have adverse reactions especially on an extremely sensitive skin.

Tip #7: Moisturize Skin

Moisturize skin immediately after a bath as it helps preserve moisture. Glycerine Petroleum jelly and Shea butter make excellent moisturisers naturally replenishing parched skin.

Tip #8: Skip Astringents

Exclude face peels, toners and astringents containing alcohol, as these tend to dry out, thicken and irritate skin

Tip #9: Sunscreen Protection

Winter sun too can be damaging. Therefore, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to your hands and face, half an hour before going out in the sun for skin protection.

Tip #10: Lip Balm

Use a lip balm containing an SPF of at least 15.  This prevents dry chapped lips.

Tip #11: Skin Hydration

Since skin loses moisture during winter, it is imperative to keep it hydrated.  Drinking eight to ten glasses of water every day, keeps skin well moisturised from inside, keeping your skin soft, supple and healthy.

Tip #12: Balanced Diet

Last but not the least; take a winter-skin- friendly-diet consisting of rich antioxidant substances like vitamins A, C and E healthy fats and essential minerals.  These help neutralise free radicals damage, protecting skin from sagging, ageing and dryness.
