Dogs have been man’s best friends. This is true to its words. Since times immemorial dogs are closely associated with human beings. There are a number of different types of dogs. Each dog breed is unique in its size, temperament, health and grooming needs. Depending on the breed of the dog, they can be divided into different categories. The American Kennel Club has recognized 157 breeds of dogs.
Man has groomed this breed for assistance in hunting and sport. Among this group few dogs develop vision and they are known as “sight hounds” or “gaze hounds”. This breed is the swiftest and tallest among the ancient breeds. Their strong eyesight helps them to sight the prey and their dexterity helps them to catch it. Few dogs in this breed have a strong sense of smell. Their physical strength and determination to hunt makes them unique in the breed. The dogs in this breed are known as Basset Fauve De Bretagne, Basset Griffon Vendeen, Basset Griffon Vendeen, Norweigian Elkhound.
Working Dogs group
For activities like transportation of goods, rescue and search operation, pulling carts and protecting people, these types of dogs is very apt and suitable. They are known for their strength and intelligence. Russian Black Terrier and German Pinscher are some dogs in this group.
Though these dogs were initially bred to assist man in various activities, these types of dogs no longer work and have become redundant. This utility group is also known as ‘non sporting group’. German Spitz, Japanese Akita Inu, Japanese Shiba Inu, Tibetan Spaniel are the dogs in this group.
Because of their small unique size these breeds of dogs look very attractive. In spite of their fragile appearance they are strong and energetic. Very popular name in this breed is Pomeranian and Chihuahua.
The name terrier has come from the Latin word meaning “earth”. These dogs are also small in appearance but they are strong and have the capacity to dig the ground. They are bold, energetic and appealing. Kerry Blue terrier, Fox terrier, Lakeland terrier and Scottish terrier are few names in the breed.
Spaniels, Setters, Retrievers, Hunting Pointing Retrieving breeds belong to this group. They are very affectionate and very loyal. These types of dogs are known for retrieving animals that are wounded by hunter’s arrows. Cocker Spaniel, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever and Pointer are few names in the group.
Herding group of dogs is popular for their assistance to man in maintaining flocks and herds of animals. These dogs have the ability to drive the animals in the herd into groups. They are quick learners and are good at listening to commands. German Shepherd, Puli, Border Collie and Briard belong to this group.
In this group there are different breeds of dogs waiting for recognition by the American Kennel Club. Puggle, Cane Corso, Dogo Argentino are some of the names in this category.

German shepherds are known for their distinctive temper. They are very obedient and trustworthy. Originally this breed was used for cattle grazing. German Shepherds need constant physical activity. They love games and long walks.
They are commonly known as Doberman. They were originally bred for defense and protection. They are very active physically and get accustomed to city life easily. They are very protective about their owners.
